Chapter 4 Part 9

The entity coalesced into a blob of deep shadow near the edge of a ravine. Had anything alive and interested been in the vicinity it would have seen only what appeared to be a deep shadow on the well lighted bare rock. Only it was no simple shadow. It had no real form, nor had it any single identity. Once it had been called Serpent Blackheart, and it had been pitifully weak in comparison to its present state. No more. That existence was in the past and not worthy of remembering. All that mattered now was the present and the future.

It had desired that should a name be necessary it would answer to Ragnera, god of war. Ragnera, who had once been Serpent Blackheart, son of the Godking now found that in its divine state, it was far more powerful than all but the very greatest of the gods. It was, of course not as powerful as the Godking himself, but Ragnera was confident that it could defeat any of the other gods under the proper circumstances.

The blob of darkness solidified into an ungendered humanoid figure. After a moment's indecision Ragnera decided to retain its former gender and molded its body into a tall male. He stared out over the land below. As a god he was in complete control of his appearance, and his mind now comprehended incredible knowledge. Closing his eyes he remembered the beginning of the universe.

"In the beginning," he recited to the audience of mountains and valleys, "all was dark. When upon this perfect shadow was contaminated by the burning of the Creator's light. The blemish of light spread and folded back the peaceful and submissive shadows like the infection it is."

The god opened his eyes. He stood over a hundred meters tall. A giant mountain of flesh standing atop a mountain of stone. He raised his hand and shook a fist at the heavens.

"When the gods realized the truth that the Overlords hid from us, we ousted the Creator's pawns and resolved to return the universe to the darkness which spawned it."

Ragnera opened his hand palm up. A ball of bright blue flame burned steadily on his palm. "We shall cleanse the world and then move out to the stars and reclaim the lands our ancestors knew before the Overlords attempted to foil our plans." With that he pointed his finger toward the blue sun. "Thy prison will soon be broken!" he screamed into the sky as he loosed the bolt of flame skyward.

Ragnera leapt into the clouds and soared across the ether to the higher planes of existence. He stood among the stars and gazed back at the tiny world that had given him birth. He had reached the limits of his powers. He was held prisoner by the blue sun just as the other gods were. This was the knowledge that came to him with his divinity. The Creator's curse had been made the day the Overlords had been defeated. For the life span of a single star, the gods and their king, the traitorous Overlord who had turned on his brethren were bound to dwell on the planet Assile. The Creator continued to rule His domain, the rest of the universe, but within the sphere, outlined by the blue sun's influence, the Creator had washed His hands for a time.

Some of the gods were of the opinion that when the time came, they would make restitution to the Creator and renounce their godhood to return to His favor. Other gods, himself included felt that they could spread out and conquer planets of their own. Had they not paid for the right?

The gods were in a prison. The planet's inhabitants, though not aware of it, were the gods amusement only until their sentence was done. But the Creator had also included guards and a warden. This much the god knew. The blue sun was their warden. Its life defined the length of their sentence. Though they possessed the power of gods, their combined might still fell short of the awesome energies of a single star.

But, they had a plan. They were immortal and they would bide their time growing stronger and stronger. Then when their time came, they would be invincible.
