Chapter 3 Part 7

Sam sprinted carefree throughout he woods. He had been running for about fifteen minutes when he entered a small meadow. There sitting on a stump was a figure he recognized.

"Tyson," he exclaimed gleefully.

"Hello, Sam," Tyson greeted him. "I’ve been looking for you."

Sam extended his hand and Tyson clasped it warmly. "They said you ran away because you had betrayed them and Avery would know it," Sam said. "That’s not true is it?"

"Of course not," Tyson said with a thin smile. "Avery and I had an argument long ago and to keep from fighting each other, we’ve decided not to travel together, that's all."

"That’s very noble of you," Sam commended. "I’ve missed you."

"I’ve missed you too. In fact, it’s you I came to visit." Tyson reached into his tunic and withdrew a gemstone. "I had a local wizard make this for you," he said. "If you gaze deeply into it, you can see your mother's face."

Sam took the gift. "Thank you so much," he said. "You’ve been a true friend. First a buckle shaped like a dragon, and now the image of my mother. How can I thank you?"

Tyson laughed. "By letting me see the look on your face when you see your mother for the first time," he replied.

Sam smiled. He gleefully held the gemstone up to his eye. Gazing deeply into the many faceted crystal, he turned it skyward to get as much light behind it as possible.

Sam saw what appeared to be a room inside the crystal. He felt his mind hovering at the entrance to the room. Across the room was a figure dressed in an elegant blue gown. Blue! He could actually 'see' the color with his mind. The colors overwhelmed him then and he pushed his mind further taking in the awesome beauty of the colors. He wanted to get closer. He wanted to see his mother's face up close. He wanted to touch her. Sam's conscious drew closer and closer. Finally he gazed upon the face of Marlena with the full impact of wonder and love that a newborn feels when gazing upon its mother for the first time.

Then the door slammed shut.
