Chapter 5 Part 12

"Are they still there?" Samson asked. Keeneye looked up at the suns and then randomly glanced at the rock slope as he turned around to fetch his canteen from his horse's saddle.

"Yes." He opened the container and took a drink then returned it to its place stealing another glance in the process. "I count at least fifteen."

The riders had become aware of the presence of some observers when reflected sunlight had drawn their attention to the rocks paralleling the road ahead. Keeneye and Norwind possessed better eyesight than the humans and had been scanning the rock face as innocently as they could for places where an assailant might be hidden.

Samson studied the situation. The road they were on ran generally southeast with an outcropping of rock on the left. The right was dominated by open plains. "I think we should turn right and head due south."

Keeneye immediately complied. Battle tactics was Samson's specialty and everyone trusted his judgment. "This way we can put some distance between them and us before the attack, and we also can force them to attack before they are ready or abandon the attempt altogether."

"Good call," Ultrecht agreed. "The worse thing we can do is walk straight into their trap."

Samson led the others by urging his mount into a smooth gallop. A few seconds later the first wave of arrows rained down around them. Samson saw two arrows on an errorless deadly trajectory towards Keeneye's unprotected back suddenly halt their flight as if hitting an invisible wall. The deadly shafts fell impotently to the ground. Ultrecht's shield spell was the only thing protecting them at the moment.
