Chapter 5 Part 11

Morteous and Major Isefk of the Royal Serpentine Guard watched the four horsemen approach from their places of concealment in the rocks above the road.

"Two elves and two humans," the major said as he folded up his spy glass, a rare instrument possessed by only those having power or wealth. "The two humans are in the back," he added.

"One of the elves is an archer, the other a monk," Morteous informed him.

"An elven monk?"

"I am sure that there is a good story behind that somewhere," Morteous admitted. "But that can be learned later. My nephew is very adept at extracting information from the dead." He peered back at the quartet of riders. "What plan do you suggest?"

"The humans' professions?" Isefk asked.

"An archmage, and a warrior."

Isefk considered the information. "I recommend we catch them in a crossfire from under cover at first, and concentrate on taking out the archer and archmage. Those two can do a lot of damage if we give them targets. Arrows and spears would be wasted on the monk. And even a weapons master can do little against a legion of elite soldiers."

"In our last ambush we lost our men at an exchange of ten to one against these people," Morteous reminded.

"That was then," Isefk retorted. "This is now." He made some hand signals to an aide behind them and the aide vanished quietly.
